There is also a 'kill-word' command with Meta d shortcut (try Esc d if you dont have Meta key). Option key as escape character Now using the option () backspacecombination, I can delete a whole word. The only difference is you have to use 'shell-kill-word' command instead, since you want to delete forward. This can be done going to iTerm2 > Preferences > Profiles > Keys. Refresh the terminal with this command source /.zshrc. I set the left option ()key to act as an escape character. Now you can kill word-by-word (from right to left aka backwards) by hitting Option-Backspace. inside the opened file, add this function to it probably anywhere before the end of the last line.
